Thanks for the review. Ultimately it is a more affordable offering than the 24-70 f2.8 with a little less quality. Personally I would have liked to see something more innovative like a 35-85 f2.8 or even f2 lens for portraiture. Now that would make a new lens interesting beyond simply price.
Comparing this 70-200 at 70 km to the 24-70 mm f/2.8 at 70 km, well it isn’t even close. Sharpness is noticeably better. I have used it on a Z7 II with the 1.4 TC for larger shore birds and mammals. The detail is awesome. While it is a good portrait lens, I still prefer my 105mm f/1.4 adapted to my Z6.
One example was releasing the 24-70 f/4, then the f/2.8 version, and now the 24-120mm. Another example was releasing the 14-30mm, then the 20mm f.1/8 and finally the best ultra-wide zoom in the 14-24mm f/2.8. Nikon has also released the f/1.8 primes long before the f/1.2 versions.

A 24-70mm zoom lens covers a sweet spot of the focal length range. Capture wide-angle views one moment, close-ups the next and everything in between. This reimagining of the classic everyday zoom, optimized and evolved for new Z cameras, achieves breakthrough image quality and performance for both stills and videos.
The Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens is bigger, faster, and heavier than the f/4 version for the mirrorless system, but is still smaller (one inch) in length than the F-mount sibling making it much more
Autofocus. To start, autofocus on the 24-70mm f/4 S lens is nearly silent, largely thanks to the AF-P motor. The lens also autofocuses very quickly and accurately overall. When testing lenses for sharpness at Photography Life, we rarely ever use autofocus to lock on target because its accuracy can vary at the pixel level, even in live view.

Like the Z range cameras and other lenses, the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens is fully weather-sealed and also includes a fluorine coating for repelling water, dust and dirt. At the time of writing, the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens retails for around £2,199, making it the most expensive lens in the Z line-up to date.

And the 24-120 + 85 is cheaper the the 24-70 f/2.8. If I am right then the 14-30 f/4 as a second lens is also a good choice. A other choice is the 24-120 or the 24-200. For kits is the 24-120 slightly better, but for travel the 24-200. The 24-120 is a S lens and better weather resistant than the 24-200.

Nikon Z 24-70 f/2.8 vs f/4. Jul 23, 2019. 9. Don't recall seeing a direct comparison posted so decided to do a quick one myself, mostly to check if my f/2.8 copy is good. Turns out it has a tilted element that exhibits soft left edges/corners @ 50mm, and a little bit @ 70mm as well. These were all hand-held but with fast shutter speeds (1/2500 Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S初步的比較 - 因為先前的24-70 f4 S的畫質己經夠好了,所以我原本以為f2.8S就是畫質一樣但光圈變大。但看起來f2.8S在光圈f2.8到f8幾乎沒有任何差別期待接下來有更多的評比。(Nikon單眼相機 第1頁)

The Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S is a professional general-purpose zoom designed for Nikon’s full-frame Z-series mirrorless cameras. Announced in February 2019, it’s the fifth Z-mount lens, following the Z 14-30mm f4 S, Z 24-70mm f4 S, Z 35mm f1.8 S and Z 50mm f1.8 S, but crucially is the first native zoom with a fast f2.8 focal ratio.
SrMphoto said: I feel that the Z 24-70 f/2.8 S lens is slightly better than the Z f/4 lens. I agree with Jim Kasson's conclusions: "Again, the fast lens looks very good. For the money, the kit lens is outstanding." IMHO that is a very good review for the optical comparison - it does certainly point out how good the kit lens is.

Just for the record, both the Z Nikkor 24-70mm in f/4 and f/2.8 version are known to be stellar lenses. Unless your wife really need the f/2.8 aperture, I would suggest considering the f/4 Z Nikkor zoom. It's officially a "kit lens", but performance wise it's a pro class lens.
